Solomon Lot 70 is our purest expression of Napa Valley terroir, sourced each year from the best parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes at our disposition. It has traditionally been made with grapes from our late Covenant partner Leslie Rudd's Oakville and Mount Veeder vineyards. However, we have also developed relationships with Napa growers who produce equally exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, including Francis Mahoney, one of the region's original wine pioneers. The wine is named after Jeff's mothers family - the Solomons, and for for Leslie, whose Hebrew name was Shlomo (Solomon). The number, 70, is gematria (Hebrew numerology) for "wine."
Our fifteenth vintage of Solomon Lot 70 is phenomenally lush, supple-textured and loaded with ripe, black fruit and spice flavors. Dark, black fruit is at the fore, couched in continued and long-lasting layers of excellence. This might be our greatest Solomon Lot 70 yet.
"100 Points: The wine is seamless with pristine flavours, firm ripe tannins and layers of complexity that when I drink a wine like this, I want to explore over and over. Keep sticking my nose in the glass, and keep tasting over hours. It has the inviting freshness of the vintage, with notes of black cherry, spiced plum, sous bois, loamy earth, sagebrush with a subtle minty freshness, all supported by those marvelous tannins and a firm spine of crisp acidity all leading to a mineral-scented, full- bodied finish. Just spectacular. Sourced mainly from the McKenzie Mueller Vineyard in Carneros and a portion from Bengier Vineyard in Oak Knoll, farmed by Steve Matthiasson. Native yeast fermented in stainless steel, and aged 18 months in 60% new French oak. On the day I tasted this wine, Morgan also poured a 2015 Solomon Lot 70, which came from the Rudd Vineyard in Oakville, which is utterly expressive, with a coiled up energy and tension and darkberry fruit and forest berry spice, earthy richness and energy and the 2023 release is made the same way and has the same energy, tension, and generosity that will see it age as gracefully, if not more.
Drink now for its youthful exuberance or hold for the next 15-25 years easily."
